Standard Carry-on Baggage Allowance
(economy class)
Passengers departing from UK airports are permitted to carry one item of cabin baggage each. Cabin baggage must not exceed a maximum length of 56 cm, width of 36 cm and depth of 23 cm including wheels, handles, side pockets etc. Other bags, such as handbags, may be carried within the single item of cabin baggage. All items will be x-ray screened and must not exceed 6 kilos in weight in Economy and Premium Economy, and 8 kilos in Upper Class.

Transatlantic and Caribbean routes: Upper class 3 bags each 32kg max. Premium economy 2 bags, each 32kg max. Economy 2 bags each 23kg max. Bag width + length + height =158cm max. South Africa, Australia, Asia or Dubai: Upper class total maximum luggage weight of 30kg per passenger. Premium economy/economy 23kg per passenger.
Additional allowance for divers No – but the transatlantic allowance is adequate for most divers' kit.

Excess baggage fees Transatlantic and Caribbean routes: Charged per piece, £60 to £90 per piece depending on route. South Africa, Australia, Asia or Dubai: charged by weight, 1.5% of the normal adult economy fare per kg, charges variable and can be high so contact reservations 0870 380 2007 for details.
Equipment carriage requirements Pack valuable or fragile items such as jewellery, keys, money/credit cards, cameras, laptops and other personal electrical items in your cabin baggage allowance and keep it with you at all times. If you decide to pack them in your checked in baggage you should have them adequately insured as liability for damage to these items is strictly limited.
Specialist camera carriage requirements US security X-rays will fog film – pack in hand baggage and ask to have it checked manually, or develop/print locally.
Current security advice Check with airline and airport for updates. Liquids : Nov 2006 regulations. Vehicle access July 07 restrictions. US Transport Security Administration (TSA) has been screening 100% of baggage at all US commercial airports. Info www.tsa.gov. The TSA advise that bags are left unlocked in order to facilitate their search process, however Virgin Atlantic does not support this advice. General Comments Arrive at the airport at least 3 hours ahead of the scheduled departure time, or 2 hours if you have checked in on-line. For early flights from Gatwick you can use twilight check-in, 12:00 to 21:00 the day before, then arrive 50min before your flight departure.
