| Activities |
Founded in 1996, Reef Check is a volunteer, ocean conservation organization designed to save coral reefs globally and temperate reefs in California. Now in its ninth year of operation, Reef Check is active in over 82 countries and territories throughout the world.
| Purpose |
Reef Check is a standardised methodology that allows divers, after a little instruction and practice, to gather data on the health of coral reefs in a few days. The project does not generally organise distinct trips but the details of the technique can be downloaded from the website and surveys can be undertaken during any diving holiday on a reef. By recording key indicators of reef health, Reef Check aims to build a unique database giving a global synopsis of the state of the world's reefs. You can contribute to this database by conducting a survey and submitting the data online to the global database. Reef Check now also promotes education awareness programmes and building capacity for local communities to monitor their own reefs.
| What do customers do |
Utilise divers in the tropics to assess reef health using a standardised survey protocol. Promote awareness of the importance of reefs. Build local capacity for monitoring reefs.
