Activities The Trust runs two photo-id projects for basking sharks and whales sharks, as well as The Great Eggcase Hunt. Additionally the Trust works with anglers, boat handlers and divers to encourage best practice and codes of conduct with several species of shark. The Trust's on-going campaign to end finning, both in EU waters and internationally, continues with signed petitions, lobbying and awareness raising. It also produces factsheets, leaflets, and has an extensive range of displays available for short term loan.
Purpose To faciliate and support the study, management and conservation of sharks, skates and rays through public education and targetted projects.
What do customers do For diver interest specifically, the Trust runs two photo-id projects: the Whale Shark Project at www.whalesharkproject.org where divers can upload their whale shark photos to a database that will analyse the unique spot patterning of the shark in each image - this database of images is available for everyone to analyse, including localised whale shark tagging projects that may find their individuals have travelled further afield than expected. Nearer to home is the European Basking Shark Photo-ID Project at www.baskingsharks.co.uk with similar aims - but instead of spots it's the dorsal fin we want photos of. Divers can also assist with The Great Eggcase Hunt. The empty eggcases of skates and rays are regularly washed up onto beaches around the UK, but we now want to take the Hunt underwater. We welcome photos and information on eggcases spotted on the seabed - please don't touch or remove them. Email your sightings to enquiries@sharktrust.org. W! e also welcome sightings of sharks in UK waters - porbeagle, mako, angel, blue and smooth hammerhead (and more!) all occur in UK waters. If you see them, let us know at enquiries@sharktrust.org.
