U/W PHOTOGRAPHY FOR THE TRAVELLING DIVER

By Tony Baskeyfield

5     Nikonos V system

Generally regarded as the industry standard, with a comprehensive range of lenses.
It is an old design and was discontinued from manufacture in 2002. There is a large second-hand market for these cameras. Spares from Nikon will continue.

The water corrected lens quality is second to none and is designed to focus sharply underwater. Nikonos lenses will always give a higher resolution than equivalent air lens behind a port.
The disadvantages are:
  • It is sensitive and easy to flood,
  • Most of the lenses do not work in air
  • The viewfinder is difficult to master
  • The Nikonos V is not a SLR camera
  • All focusing must be done by estimation
