Austria

Like to think you’re immune to the cold? Do you scorn those who stop diving in Britain over the winter?? Well, here’s somewhere you might find interesting… In Austria, there are a lot of keen divers who only have one problem. They don’t have a coastline! That’s no problem though because they do have lots of beautiful Alpine lakes which offer year round diving. Year round? Yes, in the winter some of these lakes offer speciality ice diving. The lakes are huge and deep – more like inland seas and offer a variety of sites within them. Some even have wrecks to visit.

Traunsee
The second largest lake in Austria after the Attersee, and very deep. Due to it’s size and depth this lake is cold all year and extremely clear. Many watersports are on offer, not only diving.

Attersee
At around 23km long, this is the largest lake in Upper Austria. Full of fishlife and plants, it is home to over 30 dive sites including a small shipwreck.

Lake Wiestalstausee
At an altitude of 800m, this is a good site for an ice dive. Courses are run here.

Of course, Austria is a fabulous year round tourist destination and whatever time you visit you will find a myriad of activities to keep you busy. In the summer, you can walk in the hills and mountains, ride, swim in the lakes, waterski, surf (?), sail and sightsee. In the winter you are in the heart of the Austrian winter sports area. There aren’t many places you can ski and dive in the same holiday. There are many accommodation options open and also a plethora of restaurants and tourist facilities.
