The Balearics

Map provided by www.worldatlas.com

The Balearics offer warm, clear water diving only 2 hours flying time from the UK in (relatively) cheap resorts. There are numerous dive operations on the islands of Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza but it is worth conducting some research before departing to ensure that the dive operator you select will meet your requirements.

Diving is available all year round but winter can be unpredictable.

Although the islands have a reputation as being the night club capitals of Europe, there are more peaceful spots. Again, early research before departure will help to select an appropriate resort and accommodation.

Menorca (Minorca)
Menorca is the second largest of the islands but the least overrun with tourists. Most diving is from boats with cavern diving being particularly popular. The island also offers wrecks as well as a wide range of sealife including barracuda, grouper, moray eels, rays and the occasional dolphin.

Mallorca (Majorca)
Largest of the islands, hosting up to 5 million tourists a year. There is a marine reserve around Sa Dragonera, an islet on the western tip of the island, which offers spectacular diving with other sites offering wrecks and caverns.

Ibiza
Best known for its clubbing scene and nudist beaches, Ibiza also boasts good diving opportunities Sights at the Cala d'Hort marine reserve, established 2 years ago near San Antonio in the west of the island, include a forest of gorgonia and an underwater pinnacle that attracts diverse fishlife. One dive operator now runs a liveaboard around the island.

Getting There
Two hours flying time from the UK with numerous different carriers.

Accommodation
A variety of hotels, apartments and camp sites. Out of season can be considerably cheaper as the crowds of tourists return to work.
