North Male Atoll (Kaafu), The Maldives
North Male is the principal atoll of the Maldives and includes the capital Male. The atoll is administered from the island of Thulusdhoo. The atoll is 69 km long and 39 km wide. There are 50 islands. Out of these eight islands are inhabited and 42 uninhabited islands of which 27 are resorts. Many of these resorts are close enough to the airport for transfers to be made by dhonis. The journey for the more distant islands can take over four hours. For such islands it is usually better to use speedboats and seaplanes.
The capital Male has reached its physical limits and has a population of around 48,000.
The atoll can be split into seven further regions that are:

Gaafaru (04.35N 73.23E)
Makunudhoo (04.35N 73.23E)
Helengeli (43.37N 73.33E)
Meerufenfushi (04.27N 73.41E)
Himmafushi (04.18N 73.34E)
Rasfari (04.23N 73.24E)
All of the atolls have resorts apart from Gaafaru.

The Male region (04.12N 73.28E) has five resorts:

Gaafaru region (04.35N 73.23E) has no resorts although it is purported to have at least six wrecks.
Makunudhoo region (04.35N 73.23E) has five resorts:

Makanudu (Makunudhoo)
Summer Island (Ziyaaraiyfushi)
One and only at Reethi Rah (Medhufinolhu)

The Helengeli region's (43.37N 73.33E)

The Meerurenfushi region (04.27N 73.41E) has three resorts:
Asdu (Asdhoo)
Meeru (Meerufenfushi)
Gasfinolhu
Apparently this resort only caters for the Italian market.
